WHAT IS EARLY DANCE?

Early Dance or Historical Dance are terms used for dances current in Western Europe, in courts and

country houses, in taverns and theatres, from the Middle Ages up to the end of the 20th century.

Information about these dances is derived from original sources, printed books and manuscripts, and from dance research and scholarship.

The Dolmetsch Historical Dance Society and The Early Dance Circle represent dancers and dance groups throughout the UK & abroad.  They both hold regular events, workshops, conferences and lectures and produce publications and educational resources to support dancers, teachers, choreographers, and anyone interested in the dance heritage of our culture.
