2012 – The minuet in 18th century Spain: a change in cultural identity?

The minuet arrived from France to Spain with the establishment of the Bourbon dynasty at the Spanish throne in 1700. This dance triumphs in the city town after its success in the court: it constitutes one of the required dances in public balls (1767-1773) and one of the labels of good education in high society. This presentation aims to ask about the influence of the minuet in the cultural identity of Spain.

Did the Spanish minuet differ from its French homonymous? How was it learned? Who danced it? How was it described in the Spanish treatises of that time? How was it described by French travellers? What image was evoked in those travellers? Is it possible to find the tracks of 17th century Spanish dance in this minuet?
